Coconut Water

Coconut Water – it’s so hot right now.  Coconut water has long been a popular drink in the tropics, especially in India, Brazilian Coast, Southeast Asia, Pacific Islands, Africa, and the Caribbean, where it is available fresh, canned, or bottled.  Recently coconut water has been marketed as a natural energy or sports drink due to its high potassium and mineral content. Marketers have also promoted coconut water for having no fat and very low amounts of carbohydrates, calories, and sodium, although the claims to it’s health benefits are largely unfounded at this point.  Coconut water is actually a juice with a small amount of sugar and other nutrients.  It is the clear liquid located in the center of a coconut,  not to be confused with coconut milk or cream, which is a liquid puree of the coconut meat.

When I first heard about coconut water I only saw Vita Coco marketed heavily.  Then I began to see many different coconut water brands at the store and naturally started to try out my options.  I always seemed to reach for the Zico coconut water as I seemed to enjoy the flavor of it the most.  What exactly makes one type of coconut water taste different than the other?  My guess is the type of coconut or region the coconuts come from.  Even though they are all coconut water, they do have distinct tastes.

One day Morgan and I decided to do a Coconut Water blind taste test because we seemed to have differing opinions on what the best coconut water brand was.  We made sure each coconut water was just that, pure coconut water.  We took turns trying all the different brands and wrote down our comments about each, then picked our favorite.  Needless to say we were both very surprised with the brand that ended up being our final choice.

The brands:  Cali Coco, Goya, Amy & Brian, Zico, One, C2O and Vita Coco.

During the blind taste test we wrote down each others comments about the coconut water we had just tried. Here are some of our comments we made, in no particular order:  diluted coconut flavor, too sweet, limey, metallic flavor, smells like alcohol, bitter after taste.

The results:  Susan selected Vita Coco. I felt this option had a good balance of sweetness.  Morgan selected C2O.  We both had never tried this brand before; she felt this brand was just sweet enough, but not over powering.  Seeing that both of us always purchased different brands than we ended up selecting, we were happy to exercise our right to choose from the numerous options out there.

Whether the health benefits of coconut water are there or not, I can pretty certainly say that drinking Coconut Water over sugary sports drinks is much better for you.  For your next workout try hydrating with coconut water!

Have you ever tried Tiana Organic Raw Coconut Water. That’s my favourite one. It tastes great and is raw. And tastes better than the Thai coconut waters

  2. Nice post guys! Have looked at coconut water from training and cost/benefit perspective, especially since I got to enjoy the right-off-the-tree, served-in-the-nut stuff in the Philippines. For me, although it’s terrifically refreshing, it’s really pricey for the potassium and marginal for other health benefits.
