With my last week of working in the loop looming, I knew I had to get my fill of my favorite lunch spots, and Oasis was at the top of my list. Located in the back of a jewelry store on Wabash and Washington (yes, a jewelry store), it’s really easy to miss if you aren’t paying attention.
Just past the rows of watches and rings, you can find Oasis and the seating area. Serving the standard Mediterranean fare, you can find everything from falafels to chicken shawarma. With appetizer size, plate or sandwich options on most of the items, there are also salads and lentil soup (which I highly recommend). On this trip, Susan and I both got the Vegetarian Combo, which is a plate filled with falafels, hummus, baba ganouj, dolmas, veggies and pita bread. I also got a side of fattoush salad because I wanted something to dip in my hummus besides the pita bread.
The falafels are crispy on the outside and tender on the inside and have a great flavor. I’ve had my fare share of falafels, and these are some of the best in Chicago. Dipping them in hummus or the side of tahini sauce is the way to go. If you’ve never tried a dolma, definitely order some here, as these are not to be missed. Seasoned rice wrapped in grape leaves and topped with a tomato sauce, you get two per vegetarian plate, but I am always wishing there were more. They are a great option for those of us trying to avoid gluten, but still want something filling.
Now we get to my favorite… the hummus, oh the hummus. I could eat this with a fork, which may or may not have happened, it is that good. Not overly garlicky, you can taste the tahini and lemon and it has a creamy texture. A staple in most of their dishes, it would be order something without it. The hummus can be ordered as an appetizer, which is perfect to share, or to have along side a soup or small salad.
