Chocolate Raspberry Smoothie

During our crazy hot summer, starting the day with a smoothie was one of the ways I tried to stay cool. Tiring of my normal breakfast of cereal or granola, making smoothies was a welcome break. First I just threw in almond milk, frozen fruit, chia seeds, or ground flax seed, but then started to get creative when I started a cleanse. Needing variety, I started adding in nut butters, protein powder, and coconut oil. The combinations are endless, and most of them come out pretty tasty.

The Chocolate Raspberry Smoothie came about because I wanted chocolate, but wanted to stick to my cleanse rules. Cacao powder has the coco flavor without the sweetness of chocolate, but adding in the raspberries and protein powder cancels out the bitterness of the raw cacao. Coco powder can be used if you don’t have cacao powder, but it will be a bit sweeter. If raspberries aren’t your thing, frozen mixed berries or strawberries would be an easy substitution. And if you are feeling extra crazy, throw in a half (or whole) frozen banana!

Chocolate Raspberry Smoothie
Makes one very generous smoothie

12 oz organic almond milk
1 scoop vanilla protein powder, optional (SunWarrior is vegan, gluten free, soy free and raw protein powder)
1c frozen raspberries
1.5 tbsp raw cacao powder
1 tbsp golden flax seed meal

Put all ingredients in a blender, blend until smooth. Pour in a glass and enjoy.
