Victory’s Banner

One weekend our friend Shivani asked us to join her for brunch at a vegetarian restaurant she had tried recently – Victory’s Banner. Located in the Roscoe Village neighborhood of Chicago (my old stomping grounds) at the corner of Roscoe & Hoyne, Victory’s Banner has been serving up vegetarian brunch and lunch for over 10 years. I can’t believe I missed this gem when I lived in the neighborhood.

In their own words: “…the restaurant stands as a spiritual expression. We exist for one reason and one reason only… to serve you joyfully. We hope to do this by offering the best food we can, prepared and served as devotedly as possible. Yes, we are vegetarian, but you won’t miss the meat! We use the finest ingredients, like free-range eggs (no hormones – they taste better!), fresh fruit, real whipped cream and great coffee. We’ve attempted to make the atmosphere uplifting and peaceful. Even the sugar packets offer an inspiring message!”

We did have a short wait for our table, however the staff was very accommodating.   They offered us coffee and even came outside where we were waiting to give us refills.  Vegan Alert – if you are Vegan, when  you try Victory’s Banner be sure to ask for their Vegan menu. They have a specific menu that outlines all of the Vegan options which obviously makes ordering a bit easier.  The regular menu is completely Vegetarian.

I started my meal with a cup of soup. Although I was here for breakfast I had to get the soup because the soup of the day happened to be a Vegan Vegetable Soup, how convenient. It was great and was served with a side of Hearth Bread and Vegan butter. I also had a cup of seasonal fruit to accompany my meal.

For my main course I went for the Eggless Wonder. This dish included marinated tofu with broccoli, onion, tomato, mushroom, zucchini, potato and brown rice, served with hearth bread (no side potatoes because they are included in the dish). The marinated tofu had a great flavor and the combination of rice and potatoes made this dish very filling.

Shivani went for the Nouvelle Burger – this was a veggie burger served with caramelized onions and goat cheese, along with greens, tomato, and a tamari-mayo spread. She also ordered the Apple and Coconut Chutney on the side. Maybe Shivani will chime in with a comment describing her burger (if she’s not too busy delivering baby Raj!).

To share with Morgan, Shivani also ordered a side of French Toast (pictured at the top). This is their award winning and must have item, so they just had to try it. The French Toast comes with peach butter and real maple syrup…amazing.

Satisfaction-promiseMorgan went for the first item on the menu and their most popular egg dish, the Satisfaction-promise. This is 2 eggs scrambled with spinach, pesto, sun-dried tomatoes and feta. It is served with Hearth Bread and potatoes on the side. Morgan also tried a side of the soy sausage. Maybe Morgan will chime in with a comment about her dish (which I assume was amazing based on the ingredients alone).

Overall, we were very pleased with the food and service at this restaurant and would like to go back to try many more of the dishes they offer. Visit Victory’s Banner on the Web, “Like” them on Facebook, but most of all give their restaurant a try, you won’t be disappointed.

The Nouvelle Burger was the best veggie burger I’ve ever had! It was so good that I had it two weekends in a row. The combination of goat cheese and caramelized onions was delicious but there are other burgers (vegan options) that sounded wonderful as well…definitely a reason to visit Victory Banner. Their teas are unique and you do feel a little more relaxed and tranquil after having a cup!
