Spicy Honey Barbecue Sauce

Memorial Day kicks off our official grilling season. This means lots of beer and wine drinking, late nights spent on decks and roof tops, and of course eating lots of delicious summer inspired dishes. Here is Chicago, our Memorial Day is shaping up to be sunny and in the mid 60’s. Perfect for outdoor cooking, spending time with friends and family, and making the most of the long weekend.

The only grilling I do is on a grill pan in my kitchen, so I am thankful for friends who take on this challenge. However, I will happily provide a zippy barbecue sauce, that would be perfect for chicken or as a dipping sauce for tots or fries. Having a tomato flavor upfront, the spice comes in later as a slow burn followed by a bit of sweetness. Feel free to experiment with the spices, as the cumin is a bit random, but I like random. If you don’t, feel free to leave it out and replace with a touch of chili powder.

Spicy Honey Barbecue Sauce
Makes about 2 cups

1 1/4 c ketchup
1/4 c apple cider vinegar
1/4 c honey
1 tbsp coconut aminos, or wheat free soy sauce
1 tbsp paprika
1 tsp cumin
1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
1 tsp black pepper

Put all ingredients together in a sauce pan, mixing as you combine. Heat of medium low heat, until the sauce starts to bubble. Remove from heat and place in a glass jar. Put in fridge overnight. This will allow for the flavors to meld.
