The juicing vs smoothie debate seems to be all anyone is talking about these days. Which is better for you? Which is the best way to get the nutrients from the fresh ingredients? How can you make a bunch of fresh vegetables blending into a liquid form taste good? And so on and so on… I tend to be a neutral party on the subject, bouncing back and forth between smoothies and juicing, but to me its all about the flavor and ingredients.

Juicing was a part of my weekday routine about 3 months ago; I would get up and make my green juice or smoothie every morning to start off my day. There was always bunches of kale, bags of carrots and loads of apples in my fridge and a few other random items that I would decided to throw in the juicer if the mood struck. Seeing as how life and work tend to get in the way of healthy habits , juicing slipped out of my daily routine and the juicer crept back into my cabinet and stayed there. With my 2014 resolution to get back into my kitchen more, the juicer has made a triumphant return, and is now running at 8am every morning.
I have a very big spot in my heart for Caesar Salad. As a youngster, Parmesan cheese was a staple on our dinner table. I put it on everything. Pasta, green beans, eggs, broccoli, whatever it was, it probably had Parm on it. So when I discovered there was a salad in which the dressing was uber rich and creamy, and then was covered in my favorite cheese, my mind was blown. This was it for me. I loved it. Thinking that since I was eating a salad, it was healthy. Wrong. But, there are ways to make even our favorite not-so-light-in-calories meals into a healthier and satisfying dish.
Need a morning pick-me-up? One that is non-caffeinated and has all sorts of goodness blended into a smooth puree of sweet, delicious, green (sort of) liquid? Well, I have just the thing you are looking for… Not really a juice, not so much a smoothie, but a super tasty way to start your morning.
Getting more dark, leafy greens into my diet always seems to be a concern. Kale is so good for you, but sometimes is so not fun to eat. Disguising it by making kale chips, or smothering it in avocado are all fine and good, but my favorite way is to make scrambled eggs with a healthy serving of kale, which happen to be delicious when wrapped in warm corn tortillas. A friend of mine is a burger connoisseur – you know who you are (ahem…Nick). He tries many different burgers, shares his opinions about them and maintains a mental list of his top favorite burgers; Hopdoddy being the home to one of his Top Five. Our SXSW crew had never tried Hopdoddy in years past (Nick being the exception), so we were determined to get there this year. Read more
Back again with one of our latest obsessions – Brothy Soups. We live in Chicago, it’s the middle of winter and all we seem to want is piping hot soup. This week we are facing off, you guessed it, brothy soup – White Bean & Kale Soup to be exact. We bring you a turkey version vs. a smokey vegan version – both brothy, flavorful, filling and guaranteed to warm you up. Read more
Here’s the deal. I really hate planning things out in advance. I’m not the best at packing ahead for trips, setting up a weekly menu for myself, or even getting a grocery list together before I get to Whole Foods. Of course the last one might be a bit on purpose, since I like having an excuse to get a tea and stare at the cute baristas while I gather my thoughts. Read more
Soup doesn’t always have to take hours; this one comes together and is ready to eat in under an hour, start to finish. And if you are anything like me you likely have all the ingredients on hand and could make this soup today without stepping foot in the grocery store. Read more
I have Bloat Coat. There I said it… We all know what I am referring to, even if you haven’t heard that term before (Thanks TMZ). It’s the layer of “bloat” that creeps up after a few days of overindulgence. A few too many glasses of wine here, a few too many second helpings there, or having dessert with every dinner for a week, and voila , it appears. Creeping around your midsection, forcing you to take a deep breath before zipping up your jeans, and demanding a huge sigh as the zipper finally makes it all the way up. I have it…and I’m trying to get rid of it. Read more
For our friends Thanksgiving celebration, as well as Christmas Eve with my family, I provided most (if not all) of the Vegan food. One item in particular was very popular with even the meat eaters; it was my Vegan Wellington. This is a great winter recipe being warm, flavorful and filling. I served this as the Vegan main course along with other sides, however it even works as an all-in-one meal. Read more
First, let me apologize for the not so pretty picture… I took this at my desk at work, and wasn’t thinking at the time it would be on the blog… But decided to post it anyways because it’s one of my favorite items in the Whole Foods prepared food section. Filled with lots of nutritious veggies, I can never pass up getting some when I see it… Read more
